We invite you to join our capital campaign to rebuild Fort Dobbs (1756-1762), North Carolina's only French and Indian War fort and battleground and one of the State's 27 historical sites.
For the first time in more than a generation, an important American historical site will be reconstructed authentically from the ground up on its original foundations. Moreover, Fort Dobbs is the last of 14 French and Indian War forts in North America to be rebuilt. This is our last chance. Let's do it right!
The Friends of Fort Dobbs organization includes over 1,200 supporters from across North America who are dedicated to bringing its 31 pristine acres back to its 18th Century glory. Gifts to the Friends' campaign are tax deductible. We are a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization.
The completed Fort Dobbs site will include the nation's largest reconstructed log blockhouse, visitor center, museum and related structures. Site design work will be guided by a recently completed world-class Comprehensive Interpretive Plan created by Haley-Sharpe of the United Kingdom. Haley-Sharpe has completed design work at Stonehenge, Historic Jamestowne, the Smithsonian, Fort McHenry and other significant museum sites around the world.
Fort Dobbs is strategically located in Statesville, North Carolina, within just a few miles of Interstates 77 and 40 about 45 miles north of Charlotte and west of Winston-Salem. An estimated 70 million people travel within minutes of Fort Dobbs annually. A reconstructed Fort Dobbs will become one of the most popular, "must-see" living history centers in America.
Today, Fort Dobbs is the site for nationally renowned living history reenactments that will attract about 30,000 visitors in 2010. It’s estimated that number will grow to 125,000 annually when the rebuilt Fort Dobbs and visitor amenities are completed. Fort Dobbs has a well-earned reputation for authenticity in everything from its interpretive programs, clothing, food, music, weapons, to its historic reenactments.
With more than 1.4 million children living within 100 miles, Fort Dobbs is one of North Carolina's most important educational "outdoor" classrooms. Over 10,000 school kids will visit the fort in 2010 learning about and living-with all five senses engaged-the "War That Made America" and frontier life in the mid 1700s. Fort Dobbs is also the State's largest scout encampment area.
Fort Dobbs will be reconstructed in carefully planned phases with the initial $2.6 million of private funds used to prepare the site and rebuild the log fort. Over the next few years, funding is expected from both public and private sources to complete the project. Today, the site contains a small museum, scale replica of the original fort and unearthed artifacts. Over 6,000 artifacts have been found on site by archeologists.
We invite you to join our Friends of Fort Dobbs organization today, and also our "Adventure 250 Years in the Making" campaign to bring historic Fort Dobbs back to life!
